What Laughter Africa does for education for street children in Sierra Leone

Education and Life Skills at the Interim Care Centre (ICC)
Laughter Africa provides street children with access to education through its Interim Care Centre (ICC). When children join the ICC, they receive formal schooling or vocational training that matches their age, ability, and previous learning. They also take part in life-skills workshops that strengthen their confidence, build resilience, and teach practical skills they can use in everyday life. This support helps each child take steps toward a safer future.
Using Education to Break the Cycle of Street Life
Education is central to Laughter Africa’s long-term strategy for helping children leave the streets. By ensuring children can access school, gain qualifications, and develop skills for employment, LA helps them build stable futures and break the cycle of poverty and vulnerability that leads many children onto the streets in the first place. Through sustained educational support, children are empowered to envision new possibilities.
Paying School Fees and Supporting Reintegration Education
Whenever it is safe, Laughter Africa helps children return to their families or arranges appropriate long-term care. Once reintegrated, the organisation continues to invest in their education by paying school and exam fees, providing materials, or funding vocational training. This support remains in place until the young person finishes their chosen route, whether completing the WASSCE or a vocational programme.
